This Blueberry Frosting is smooth and creamy with a sweet blueberry flavor. The color is all natural from the fresh/frozen blueberries that we use to make the jam and it's a different shade every time! As always, this blueberry buttercream is gluten free, nut free and easily vegan!

You can make this frosting with fresh or frozen blueberries to make the jam OR you can even use store bought blueberry jam to make it even easier!

Reasons to love this frosting
- Allergy Friendly- This recipe is gluten free, nut free and easily vegan.
- Smooth & Creamy- This blueberry frosting is so soft and silky!
- Easy to Make- Whips up in one bowl and you can even use store bought blueberry jam!
Ingredient notes
- Butter/Vegan Baking Stick- Make sure to use unsalted softened and not melted. Melted will make the frosting runny.
- Vanilla- Make sure to only use pure vanilla extract that is gluten free and vegan. If you use one that is not pure, the frosting will have a chemical taste.
- Water- This frosting uses water instead of milk just like in my blackberry frosting on my Blackberry Cookies!
- Blueberries- You can use fresh or frozen to make the blueberry jam OR you can use store bought!

Substitutions and Variations
How To Make This Vegan
- Make sure to use vegan baking sticks instead of butter.
- Only use pure vanilla extract that's made in a gluten free and vegan facility.
- If using store bought jam, make sure there are no strange fillers.

How to Make Blueberry Frosting
Here are the step by step instructions to make this frosting!
Step 1: Make the Blueberry Jam
Follow the recipe for my homemade jam or you can use store bought.
Step 2: Cream the Butter or Vegan Baking Stick
In the large bowl of an electric mixer or using a hand held mixer, beat the softened butter or vegan baking stick until smooth and creamy. About 2 minutes.

Step 3: Add in the Vanilla
Add in the vanilla and beat until combined.
Step 4: Add in the Remaining Ingredients Half at a Time
With the mixer on low speed, slowly add in half the confectioners’ sugar, half the water and half the blueberry jam. Beat until combined. It will look chunky at first.
Then add in the second half of the ingredients and beat until combined again and smooth.

Expert Baking Tips
- Cream the Butter or Vegan Baking Stick- You could technically put all the ingredients in the bowl together and beat them at the same time. However, this can leave chunks of butter/vegan baking stick throughout the frosting. Your best bet is to beat the softened butter or vegan baking stick first until it is smooth and creamy for about two minutes. Then beat in all the other ingredients.
- Use Room Temperature Butter- Do not use softened or melted butter/vegan baking sticks. The Frosting will spread out into a giant liquidy mess.
Recipe FAQs
If the frosting is too thick, add more water ¼ teaspoon at a time until you get the desired consistency.
If the frosting is too thin, add more confectioners’ sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time until you get the desired consistency.
You can make this frosting the night before you need to use it.
Store it in an airtight container or a bowl covered with plastic wrap, in the fridge.
When ready to use, let it come to room temperature and rewhip to get that creamy consistency.
This recipe makes about 5 cups of frosting.
That should be enough for a 3-4 layer cake or 24 cupcakes.
For 12 cupcakes or a one layer cake, divide the recipe in half.
That is because no food coloring is required to get that amazing hue; it's all natural so the color will be different every time.
The color of the frosting will vary depending on what brand of blueberries you use to make the jam, how ripe they are and if you used fresh or frozen.
The color is never 100 percent the same, which makes it so fun.
For example, in my Blueberry Cupcakes I used fresh blueberries to make the jam and the frosting came more purple. In my Chocolate Blueberry Cake, I used frozen blueberries to make the jam and it came more magenta.

Storing and Freezing
Storing
Store extra blueberry frosting in an airtight container or a bowl covered in plastic wrap in the fridge for up to 3 days.
When ready to use, let it come to room temperature on the counter and rewhip to get that creamy consistency.
Freezing
You can freeze the frosting for up to one month in an airtight freezer safe container.
To defrost, put the frosting in the fridge the night before.
When ready to use, let it come to room temperature on the counter and rewhip to get that creamy consistency.
If still to thick, add ¼ teaspoon of water until you reach the desired consistency.
