    How to Make Chocolate Popcorn

Here are the step by step instructions to make this chocolate popcorn recipe!

Fresh warm popped corn on a baking tray.

    Step 1: Pop the Kernels

Place kernels and vegetable oil into a large pasta pot over medium heat. Cover with a lid.

Once the kernels start popping, gently shake the pot around so that the popcorn doesn’t burn and ever so slightly crack the lid open in the back of the pot so that some of the steam escapes.

Once you can count 1,2,3 seconds in-between popping, the popcorn is done. Remove from heat, sprinkle on the kosher salt and lay onto a parchment lined baking sheet.

A whisk with delicious melted chocolate.

    Step 2: Melt the Chocolate

Place the chocolate chips and ½ teaspoon vegetable oil in a microwave safe bowl.

Heat in 15 second increments, stirring after each time until completely melted.

A drizzle of warm melted chocolate in a crosshatch pattern atop the popcorn.

Step 3: Drizzle on the Chocolate and More Salt

Drizzle the chocolate over the popcorn then use a spatula to spread it around.

Sprinkle a little more salt all over.

Hardened chocolate forms a delicious shell on the curves of the crunchy popcorn.

Step 4: Cool and then Break the Popcorn Apart

Let the popcorn sit for about 30 minutes so the chocolate hardens. Once cool, break the popcorn apart using clean hands.

Or you can pop it in the fridge to speed up the process.

    Expert Tips

    • Use Parchment Paper- Line the baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent the popcorn from sticking once the chocolate hardens.
    • Melt the Chocolate Slowly- Make sure to melt the chocolate chips and oil in a heat safe bowl in the microwave in 15 second increments, stirring after each time. I know it takes way longer this way but if you put the chips in for 30 seconds, the chocolate will seize up and not be a liquid.

    Recipe FAQs

Can I use microwave bag popcorn or do I have to pop my own kernels?

Yes, you can use microwaveable popcorn if you prefer. If you do, no need for the salt. I’m sure it already has enough. Make sure the bags are gluten free and vegan.

    Can young children eat this?

No. Please follow the American Academy of Pediatrics and CDC guidelines for when children may eat popcorn.

How can I store this Chocolate Popcorn?

Store extra chocolate covered popcorn in a zip top bag for up to 2 days.

    I would not freeze this.

Homemade Chocolate Popcorn with lightly salted popcorn and glossy chocolate drizzle create a sweet/salty treat.
