    Substitutions and Variations

How to Ensure these are Vegan Treats

    • Make sure to use gluten free chocolate sandwich cookies that are also vegan.
    • Only use chocolate chips that are gluten free, nut free and vegan. Enjoy Life is a great brand for this.
    • Make sure any toppings like sprinkles, cookie crumbs, etc are gluten free and vegan.

This recipe has not been tested with some of these substitutions and/or variations due to celiac disease and food allergies. If you change any of the ingredients, please let us know how the recipe turned out in the comments below!

How to Make Chocolate Covered Oreos

Here are the step by step instructions on how to make chocolate covered oreos!

Melted chocolate in a glass bowl with a whisk.

Step 1: Melt the Chocolate Chips

Place the chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl.

Heat in 10 second increments, stirring after each time, until the chocolate is melted and smooth.

Purple and orange round sprinkles on top of the oreo.

Step 2: Dip the Cookies and add Toppings

Using a fork, submerge the "Oreos" into the melted chocolate and then place the cookies onto the baking sheet lined with wax paper.

While the chocolate on the cookie is wet, scatter on some of your toppings so they stick.

Once decorated, let the cookies sit untouched on the baking sheet for about 20 minutes until the chocolate hardens.

    Expert Tips

    • Melt the Chocolate Slowly- Make sure to melt the chocolate chips in a heat safe bowl in the microwave in 10 second increments, stirring after each time. I know it takes way longer this way but if you put the chips in for 30 seconds, the chocolate will seize up and not be a liquid.
    • Use Wax Paper- Place your cookies down on parchment paper or wax paper after submerging them in melted chocolate. Make sure to use something otherwise they will stick to your baking sheet.

    Recipe FAQs

Can I use baking chocolate instead of chocolate chips for melting?

    Yes!

Chop up about 2 cup of chocolate and still melt in a heat safe bowl in the microwave in 10 seconds increments, stirring after each time until fully melted and smooth.

Do I have to melt the chocolate in 10 second increments?

Yes. If you try to melt it all at once, the chocolate will seize up and become hard.

Can I make these ahead of time?

Yes! Just make sure the chocolate has hardened before you store them.

How do I put them in little baggies as treats?

Make sure the cookies have completely hardened before placing them in treat bags.

I like to get a cute decorative paper cupcake holder and place 3-4 cookies inside there. Then I place the cupcake holder, with the cookies, in a food safe cellophane treat bag, seal it with a twist tie and then add a ribbon and bow.

How do I store these Chocolate Covered Oreos?

Storing: Store extra chocolate covered oreos for up to 3 days in an airtight container or in a zip top bag at room temperature.

Freezing: The dipped oreos can be frozen in an airtight container or in a zip top bag for up to 14 days.

To thaw, leave out on the counter for about 2 hours or until the chocolate is not so hard that it will crack your teeth!

    Ingredients

    • 18 gluten free chocolate sandwich cookies
    • 12 ounces chocolate chips
    • 1 tablespoon sprinkles

    Instructions

    • Place the 12 ounces of chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl.
Heat in 10 second increments, stirring after each time, until the chocolate is melted and smooth.
    • Line your baking sheet with parchment paper or wax paper so that the wet cookies will be easy to remove when dry.
    • Using a fork, dip the 18 "Oreos", one at a time, into the melted chocolate, completely.
Scrape off the bottom of the cookie on the side of the bowl if need be and then place the cookies onto the baking sheet lined with wax paper.
    • While the chocolate on the cookie is wet, scatter on some of your 1 tablespoon of toppings so they stick.
Work quickly because the chocolate on the "Oreos" does solidify rather quickly.
    • After decorating, let the cookies sit untouched on the baking sheet for about 20 minutes until the chocolate hardens.
